Carmen — When Ballet Becomes Seduction, Violence and Pure Theatre There are moments when you leave a theatre having watched a performance, and there are moments when you leave having been reminded why you fell in love with the art form in the first place. My visit to the Joburg Theatre for the opening night of Carmen , presented by Joburg Ballet from 25 September to 3 October 2026, was one of those moments. This is ballet with heat in its veins. This is ballet that seduces, teases, fights, laughs, smokes, flirts, threatens and ultimately breaks your heart. It is beautiful without being polite about it. It is classical technique meeting human instinct. And at its centre is Carmen herself, brought magnificently to life by Brazil's Monike Cristina. Thank you, Brazil. Because Monike Cristina is something else. She is not simply dancing Carmen. She becomes Carmen. Veronica Paeper's Carmen is a production that understands something fundamental about ballet: the h...
Under the Shade of a Tree I Sat and Wept At the Market Theatre for the opening of Under the Shade of a Tree I Sat and Wept, I love the Market Theatre. For 10 performances only. Get your tickets now! There are certain spaces that do not merely host performance—they hold memory. The Market Theatre is one such place. You do not simply enter it; you step into a living archive of South Africa’s artistic resistance, a space where stories have always carried the weight of truth. It is theatre about theatre. A self-aware, shape-shifting work that refuses the safety of illusion. At one moment, you are submerged in the harrowing testimonies reminiscent of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission—stories steeped in brutality, injustice, and the unbearable intimacy of violence. The Big Bad Musical – Putting the Wolf on Trial and Fairy Tales on the Witness Stand There is something magical about walking into a theatre for the very first time. The architecture is unfamiliar. The corridors have no memories attached to them. Every light, every seat, every curtain feels like the beginning of a relationship waiting to happen. That was my experience at the Roodepoort Theatre . A beautiful venue with an undeniable sense of occasion. We were fortunate enough to sit right at the front, close enough to hear every laugh, witness every expression and become completely immersed in the world unfolding before us. It was my first visit, but if The Big Bad Musical is any indication of what this theatre offers, it certainly won't be my last. Produced by Stageworx , The Big Bad Musical (16–30 July 2026) takes one of humanity's oldest storytelling traditions—the fairy tale—and gleefully turns it inside out. Written by Alec Strum , with...
